Quiet Ministry.

Look at my Servant, whom I have chosen. He is my Beloved, who pleases me. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not fight or shout or raise his voice in public. He will not crush the weakest read or put out a flickering candle. Finally he will cause justice to be victorious. And his name will be the hope of the world. Matthew 12:18-21

Also found in Isaiah 42:1-4, another fulfillment passage. Here is what my study bible said, “It summarizes the quiet ministry of the Lord’s servant, who will bring justice and hope to the nations.”

Our ministry doesn’t need to be loud. In fact, we are called to be humble, calm, and quiet in ministry…just look at Jesus. Look at His life. His ministry was to be a servant of the Lord. There were moments, very few, very select, where Jesus maybe was loud (see Matthew 21:12-17). But read the bible, dive deep into how Jesus ministered. It is beautiful. And it is exactly what He calls us to do as His disciples.

“Follow Me.” Found over 20 times in the Gospels.

“It means transformation. Following Jesus means to align our lives with His teachings and example, to embrace His values as our own. It signifies a willingness to leave behind old ways and habits, to take up our cross daily, and to live out a commitment to Him above all other influences.” ~Darrel Stetler

What Jesus did, what Jesus is STILL doing:

  • Proclaiming justice
  • Acting humbly
  • Acting in a calm manor
  • Walking with compassion and love
  • Giving hope to the world

And I think, we can all be a little more like Him. No matter where we stand, I think we need to do so with quiet, humble ministry. Yes, we pray. Yes, we act. But, we don’t shout. We don’t fight. We find moments to bring unity. And we don’t move without God. We don’t speak or act emotionally. We quite literally move at God’s speed. In all aspects of our lives, we look to Jesus and we do as He says. Sometimes this can be corporately and sometimes it is more personal. A verse that I say over and over and over to myself when meeting with God is,

Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

I don’t often read the rest of the verse, but I think it is fitting here, “I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” God isn’t just a God of the universe. He is an active, living God of our earth. Right here. Right now.

And more and more I am learning to just be still. When I look at the ministry of Jesus, He did this so often. He was constantly going away to be with the Father. And what is wild is He Himself is God, yet, He kept getting away to BE with God. From a quick google search, I found nine times in the Gospels where we see Jesus doing this:

  • Mark 1:12
  • Mark 1:35
  • Luke 5: 15-16
  • Luke 6: 12-13
  • Matthew 14:13
  • Mark 6:31-32
  • Matthew 14:23
  • Matthew 15:29
  • Mark 14:32

And this is the most beautiful gift. To be alone with our Father. It gives us rest, love, and life. Because we walk out of that time, aligned with God…ready to go out in to the world and do as He says. To be in quiet ministry.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
