go to God.

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. Jeremiah 33:3

Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings. Proverbs 1:23

I have been in a season of journaling where I often write more bible verses down and less of my own thoughts. It’s been beautiful to just sit with God’s word in this way and much of this blog post reflects me, just writing verses down, praying that the little I have to say, points you to something big that God has to say to you. May He meet you where you are in this season of life.

When we go to God…He answers. These verses in Jeremiah and Proverbs show us this truth. He reveals truths, lightens our loads and gives us wisdom. He is wisdom. For now, for eternity. All over the bible we see what happens when we don’t seek Him, don’t turn to Him. Proverbs 1 gives us a good look into what happens when we refuse God.

Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD. Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with eh fruit of their schemes. For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear or harm. Proverbs 1:28-33

You see, we serve a loving God, but we also serve and just and holy God. We bear the fruit of what we do, of what we believe. If we are with God, we are with Him forever. And that fruit we bear will be bountiful and beautiful. But, if not, we face the harsh reality of our own choices and we will be far from the Lord. God will never force us to choose Him and love Him. He is always there though, waiting for when we do, if we do. And He meets us with open arms, every time we run back to Him, choose Him, go to Him. As I sat with these verses in many of my readings a few weeks ago, the Lord also brought this verse to me:

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. John 16:13

The Holy Spirit is our helper, is our guide in life, the one who gives us life. Now and into eternity. And as you may wrestle through how to go to God, I pray that his reminder rings true to you. You don’t go alone. It is His Spirit in you.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free form the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2

When we choose God, when we go to Him, and seek Him eagerly, we are free from sin and death. We are given the ultimate gift of life through the Holy Spirit. And we get to walk in freedom.

What is so beautiful about choosing God is that our eyes truly are opened to so much more of what this life is. Because when we earnestly seek God, He will reward us. Not always in the ways we expect, but in the exact perfect ways only He could design. But what I love most is that the more we seek God, the more we get to know God. And knowing God, it is the most beautiful gift we could ever receive. I heard this in a sermon from Pastor Kim at Citizen Church a few weeks back on a message about the parable of the persistent widow:

“The better you know God, the quicker you’ll run to Him; the longer you’ll wait on Him; the easier it becomes to trust Him; and the harder it becomes to quit praying.”
